Volunteering
Putting ourselves forward to give something back
Teamwork is an integral part of life at Capital One and that's why our employees spend one day a year getting involved in a community day. It's amazing what a difference a day can make when our teams take on projects they care about. Since 1996 our employees have improved environments and experiences in our communities and in doing so risen to challenges, built team spirit - and had a lot of fun.
Practical help - employees have transformed nurseries, schools, playgroups and youth centres and created play areas and community gardens, as well as boosting facilities at local recreational centres
Applying business skills - Capital One specialists have created websites and databases, business plans and financial consultancy projects for community groups as well as providing procurement advice for local charities
Supporting sports activities - Capital One teams are regular football coaches for a team in St Ann's, help at sports festivals, teach dance, volunteer to support regular sports clubs and classes and work as 'spotters' to assist with wheelchair basketball coaching
Working with children, developing life skills
Capital One attracts ambitious, enthusiastic and positive people - the kind of people who value education and can add value in the classroom. Since 1997 our employees have been taking their skills into schools to help build children's confidence in the classroom, and with key curriculum subjects.
Our adopt-a-school scheme has been in place since 1998 and enables employees to help children in schools improve their reading
School governors are regularly recruited from Capital One, with employees attracted by the opportunity to work at Board Level within schools
E-volve offers volunteers the chance to become an online buddy to a local secondary pupil, providing support to help them develop key life skills, career planning and exam preparation
Sharing skills; improving numeracy
In response to a growing need to raise numeracy levels, we are working at both grass roots and national levels to develop and deliver innovative financial education programmes and create tomorrow's financially-aware communities.
A curriculum innovation project enabling subject teachers to embed financial education into their lessons is being piloted, with our help, in Nottingham.
Number Partners, a board game designed to improve maths and money management skills, was very successfully piloted at a local school by our volunteers and is now about to go into production. Our employees also volunteer each week at a local school to play Number Partner games with students to raise numeracy levels.
The money advice sector receives support from Capital One. We partner with many organisations, such as the Citizen's Advice Bureau, to develop new strategies for indebted customers
Young Enterprise provide enterprise and business awareness courses for children of all ages; Capital One has supported a three year programme to bring the tuition to over 2,000 children each year in Nottingham
Committed to giving children a sporting chance
Capitalising on the youth, skills and energy of our employees, we work with local schools and groups to help children get involved and get fit. Seeing children become healthier and happier and more disciplined and confident is a tremendously rewarding experience.
Our employees are keen to support sports schemes, and that is why we are so pleased to be able to provide grants to get them going.
We are delighted to be working with the following organisations to bring high quality sports opportunities to children in Nottingham:
Nottingham Rugby Football Club
National Ice Centre
Whizz Kidz
Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club
Forest In the City (Nottingham Forest)
Football In The Community programme (Notts County)
